In 1827, out on the far west outskirts of the tiny town of Madison, Indiana, was built a white rural cottage all by itself.  That cottage today is unchanged as the new Sewing Center for Margie’s Country Store.  The balance of our neighborhood was built between 1845-1870. Our main building was built in two stages, the rear half in 1850, with the store front and front upstairs added in 1870.  Remember, now, for many years, throughout this country, landowners were taxed based upon the width of their property, so here we have a three-story edifice which is only 35’ in width but literally more than half a block in length, 116’ to be exact.

Mr. Cisco bought the rear house, and added all the frontal and cellar, going into business as a thriving butcher shop.  Margie’s Country Store still has all the original windows of the period, all the original trim and Italianate decorum.  For more than 45 years, the only sound along West Main St. would have been the rhythmic hooves of horses, pulling carriages, buggies, and singly with folks on horseback.  Most homes here in the neighborhood still have the original “stepping stones” on which a person stepped down and out of a coach.  The entire 300 block area of downtown Madison, Indiana, is on the National Registry of Historic Places, and we are certainly proud of our ongoing, uninterrupted heritage.

Margie’s Country Store will celebrate its 37th Anniversary of doing business on May 4, 2006, no mean achievement in this day and age!!!!  It took several months of heavy labor by Margie’s family to renovate and restore this entire building, inclusive of the digging out of the cellar, where today’s gifts and accessories are presented, complete with river-stone archways between rooms.

Time and time again, folks coming through the shop for the first time are stunned by the experience of stepping back into a simpler time, a peaceful and restful mood, surrounded by so much history.  Many do not exaggerate when they refer to shopping here as “truly a spiritual experience”.

Those are the words they use so spontaneously.  We all thank you for sharing our joy with us here in this special place.

As the Scottish would say, “Will Ye No Come Back Again?”

Margie relates,  “I continue to be fed and renewed each day by the wonderful folks who come through the store.  We are such family!!!  So much joy, sorrow, accomplishment, and setback are shared here, and that sense of togetherness is so unique today." She goes on, “I could not continue to even  keep this main store open anymore without the expertise and daily loyalty of each of my staff.  It takes every one of us to do our utmost when we are on duty.  There is no way this could ever continue without all those years of experience within our team of ladies!!!”
